MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA – The Miami Beach City Commission voted unanimously to adopt its own updated strategic plan, ‘Miami Beach Through the Lens of Resilience’. The City Commission also unanimously voted to adopt the Greater Miami and the Beaches resilience strategy, ‘Resilient305’.
Miami Beach is re-inventing the resilience from Miami Beach Rising Above, and the new strategic plan comes after having conducted a community survey. Through the Lens of Resilience is an all-inclusive strategy that focuses Miami Beach’s short-term and long-term needs.
The Resilient305 strategy is a multi-municipal collaboration between the City of Miami Beach, the City of Miami and Miami-Dade County. The objective is to develop a resilience plan that meets each involved partner’s needs such as the stresses of each community. Resilient305 works on incorporating and institutionalizing resilience in planning and operations.
“These plans truly reflect our city’s leading values and priorities and present a more integrated approach to prioritizing our resources and services,” said Jimmy L. Morales, Miami Beach City Manager. “I’m confident in their success in better positioning our community to build for resilience.”
In particular, Miami Beach is vulnerable to challenging environmental conditions. Due to its location and low-lying landscape, Miami Beach often falls victim to flooding, erosion, extreme storms and sea level rise.
According to a new study by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, global sea levels could rise by over six feet by 2100. Between 2005 to 2017, Miami Beach alone saw a loss in property value of more than $300 million – the second highest in the nation. In the future as sea levels continue to rise, more than seven million lives and trillions of dollars in real estate are at serious risk.
Miami Beach’s Strategic Plan Through the Lens of Resilience will be released later on this summer. It is anticipated be broken into topics known as Visions. The Visions will outline the goals and featured actions. Some elements from Resilient305 will be incorporated such as prosperity, neighborhoods, environment and infrastructure, mobility and organizational innovation.
