The scenes from the apocalypse were astounding. Mexico Beach in particular looked as if it had been nuked.

And gazing at the images from Hurricane Michael’s wrath, one couldn’t help but wonder:

What if it happened here?

Would we have fared any better?

Would drone images of Stuart, Port St. Lucie or Vero Beach look like what’s left of Mexico Beach?

Michael was the most powerful storm in recorded history to hit the Panhandle. According to WeatherTiger’s Ryan Truchelut, a host of meteorological factors contributed to the storm’s fury; in particular, Michael’s continuing intensification to landfall ensured destructive winds blew much further inland than is typically the case.
